Bayern Munich Legend Slams ‘Arrogant’ Guardiola

Germany and Bayern Munich icon Lothar Matthaus has launched a tirade against Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, insisting that the Spaniard “has failed again and again” since leaving Barcelona in the summer of 2012.

Guardiola established himself as one of the greatest managers of his generation after taking the top job at Camp Nou in 2008.

He guided the Catalans to 14 major honours in the space of four years, including three La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies.

The Spanish coach then moved to Bayern Munich in 2013, after a year sabbatical and quickly dominated the Germany landscape, but failed to bring the coveted Champions League trophy in Munich.

Guardiola is now plying his trade in England since he left the Bundesliga in 2016, but he is facing similar challenges in the Champions League despite the opulence and financial strength of Manchester City.

The Citizens have won the Premier League twice under Guardiola but are yet to make it beyond the quarter finals of Europe’s premier club competition, with a last-eight defeat to Lyon in 2019-20 marking their latest failure on the continent.

Guardiola was accused of altering his wonted lineup to match the French side and Matthaus thinks the Spaniard is arrogant and has urged him to stick to a winning formula in order not to be disappointed in the future.

“With Pep Guardiola I have the feeling that he always wants to do something special in big games,” the 1990 World Cup winner told Sport Bild.”

“Barcelona had a DNA, a system he pulled through. Pep was successful there. With Bayern and City, he tried it over and over again with changes and failed again and again.

“He always wanted to show that he could do even better. I would like to tell him: Pep, you are a giant trainer – but please keep your system!

“I would describe it as egocentric. Yes, that’s a harsh word, but it is due to what he did. At Bayern, Robert Lewandowski even had to play left wing once. That did not work out at all.”
